Why Choose SIS
High-Tech, Beautiful, and Comprehensive Facilities
SIS has access to swimming pools, three playgrounds, tennis courts, an indoor, air conditioned gymnasium with climbing wall, all weather sports courts, a field turf soccer pitch, three fitness centers, and a 200 meter track—facilities unique among Shenzhen’s international schools.

The SIS Libraries are made up of the Mountainside facility serving the Early Childhood Learning Center and Elementary School as well as our Bayside Library serving our middle and high school communities. The Library has a comprehensive and ever growing collection of books, reference materials, periodicals and online resources. Both libraries use Follett’s Destiny program which can be accessed from school or home though the school’s web site. The libraries are open for independent student use before and after school, and, of course, during the regular school day. Considered a community resource, we are also open to parents throughout the day. Early Childhood and Elementary classes visit the Library on both a fixed and flexible schedule. Middle and High School classes use a flexible schedule. The centers are open before and after school so that our certified librarians can assist students and parents with finding materials.
Students from kindergarten to Grade 5 have access to more than 130 computers which are connected to the school’s network and the Internet. SIS Elementary School operates a fully equipped computer lab, and every Elementary classroom has at least three desktop computers for student use. Students in Grades 2-5 have access to more than 50 laptops on mobile carts to enable technology to be integrated into core lessons.
The Middle School has a laptop program with a laptop for every two students. In the High School each student is issued a laptop and High School students have access to online courses through Virtual High School.(www.govhs.org).
Fine Arts Program
The visual arts department offers a discipline-based art program, which includes art production, art history, art criticism, aesthetic awareness, and personal expression. It is based on the elements and principles of design and offers cumulative experiences in drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, textile making, modeling, and construction. The school has two complete ceramics studios. SIS students attend art competitions and their outstanding work is displayed throughout the school. The fine arts program also supports the visiting artist program and the annual Middle and High school’s cultural conventions.
Music is a powerful force in building community and expressing individuality. Students of all ages sing, dance and learn the basics of making music. Public performances showcase student learning and demonstrate the creativity and individual expression emphasized by SIS teachers. Our program offers students several opportunities to be involved in productions throughout the year. Both band and chorus are part of the dynamic program.
World Languages
All SIS students begin studying Chinese for Speakers of Other Languages (CSOL) in Kindergarten, and continue through each grade level through the IB Diploma in Grade 12. For native and advanced near-native speakers of Chinese, SIS offers Chinese Literacy Development (CLD), a course which is designed to develop and enhance literacy for students who are already verbally fluent in Mandarin. CLD courses are offered from Grade 1 through the IB Diploma in Grade 12. Beginning in Grade 7, students also have the option of studying French as a second language. Either language may be taken to qualify for the International Baccalaureate Diploma in a student’s junior and senior years.
Sports Program
Within its physical education program, SIS provides opportunities for students to develop their skills through a variety of individual and group activities. A distinctive feature within our indoor sports facility is the climbing wall, which is used during class and after school. Outside sporting areas include full-size basketball courts and a swimming pool. As a member of All-China and Mongolia International School (ACAMIS), sports exchanges are organized for the SIS Middle and High School students throughout the year. Our students participate in tournaments for swimming, volleyball, basketball, touch rugby, and soccer.
French Bilingual Program
The French Bilingual Program offers French education for the children of native French -speaking expatriates within the context of the Shekou International School Mission, Philosophy, and Purpose. Its aims are to provide opportunities for French students to maintain and further develop competence in their native language, and to facilitate French students’ reintegration into the French National Education System upon their return to their home country. A fully Bilingual program is offered in grades K through 5, while core academic courses in French are offered as an option through distance learning to French-speaking students in the middle school. The SIS French Bilingual Program is currently under review for accreditation by the French Ministry of Education.
After School Activities
After School Activities are offered to SIS students during the course of the school year. For each of the three sessions, students sign up for activities that interest them. Those activities include such things as, wall climbing, swimming, soccer, guitar/drum, puppet making, cooking, drama, art, cartooning, Tae-Kwan-Do, Model United Nations (MUN), and more. Teachers, students, parents, and community members provide these activities for students at a nominal fee. Students use that time to make new friends, learn a new sport, improve their skills, or just have fun! For children who are English language learners, these activities provide them with opportunities to improve their language skills and to learn more about their school culture.

At SIS we believe that Service Learning is an important personal and educational experience. Service Learning involves developing understanding, acting positively and reflecting upon the local and global community.
SIS students understand that they can make a difference in the world by learning about world issues and acting in an informed way to positively impact their local and global communities. Service Learning at SIS also fosters an understanding of how others live and allows students to develop compassion and cultural understanding.
SIS has a formalized program in place with a participation requirement for the Middle and High Schools. Students are required to participate in service activities and reflect upon their experiences in their portfolio. This process is undertaken within the advisory program.
Classroom without Walls
Class excursions are integral to the school’s educational program. In every grade, students travel within China for an afternoon or even a week (depending on the grade) to places such as Shenzhen’s Water Purification Center, the Flower Market, Cultural Village, Ocean Park in Hong Kong, Macau, Yangshou, Foshan, Outward Bound in Hong Kong, Sichuan, Mongolia, and the foothills of the Himalayas!
The objectives of such excursions are to experience hands-on extensions of classroom research and activities; provide students with experiences with the host culture and natural environment; and develop friendships and cooperative relationships between students and between students and teachers.
